Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England
It may be chilly outside but wrap up warm and travel the ‘backs’ of the University of Cambridge colleges as you punt along the River Cam – an obligatory activity in the city! At this time of year, it’s free of the summer crowds, giving the waterways more of an exclusive, romantic feel. Hire your own boat or go on a guided tour. Alternatively, explore the flat, cycle-friendly city by bike (or tandem). Afterwards, head to a cosy pub for warming food and drinks. For the best views of the city, venture to the top of Great St Mary’s Tower. Be warned, there are 123 steps to climb, but once you reach the top you’ll be rewarded with stunning 360-degree views.
Bath, Somerset, England
The city of Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, seems made for romance. Tour the area on foot to make the most of its awe-inspiring architecture, from the elegant Pump Room to the sweeping Royal Crescent, you won’t be disappointed. Visit the Roman Baths and take a trip back in time to when Bath was a spa town beloved by the Romans. ‘Take the waters’ yourself at the award-winning Thermae Bath Spa and relax in mineral-rich pools. Book a Twilight session for two, to see the city lights sparkling at night from the open-air rooftop pool.

Edinburgh, Scotland
There’s something fairytale-like about Edinburgh’s Old Town, the ancient heart of the city, with its famous castle and Royal Mile. It’s an intriguing area to wander around on a trip to Edinburgh, packed with shops, eateries and attractions. Visit New Town too, to take in the Georgian and Neo-classical architecture. Looking for a romantic hike? Head to Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano, for unparallelled views of the Scottish capital. Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England
Stratford is the perfect Valentine’s Day destination for theatre lovers. Shakespeare’s birthplace is home to several theatres, including The Bearpit Theatre, which is holding a production of Shakespeare On Love on and leading up to 14th February. Catch a river and canal cruise when you’re in Stratford too. It’s a relaxing way to see the town and its surroundings. Look out for Stratford’s famous swans as you travel along.
Buxton, Derbyshire, England
The highest market town in England is also in the Peak District National Park – making it a unique place to visit on Valentine’s Day. Like Bath, it’s famed for its thermal spas – the perfect treat for a loved one. It’s also packed with gardens and parks to explore. Walk the Buxton Heritage Trail to discover several and more about the town’s history. Venture into the surrounding countryside and explore Britain’s first National Park.
Tenby, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Searching for a pretty seaside town? You can’t go wrong with Tenby. Visiting the Welsh town is like stepping into a postcard. It’s famed for its backdrop of pastel-coloured buildings, framing golden sands and blue waters, sprinkled with swaying boats. Go for a bracing beach walk on Valentine’s Day, or wander the town’s charming, cobbled streets. Head to Castle Hill to explore the romantic ruins of a Norman castle with your loved one.
