Ever heard of ‘print on demand’ and wondered what it is? “Print on demand is a flexible model that’s perfect for small print runs. It’s tailored to your individual needs and offers a range of benefits.” says Roger Gilson, Operations Director at Dennis Maps. Roger shares everything you need to know about the service.
What is print on demand and what benefits does it offer?
It’s a service where you can print a small number of a product on request, rather than printing in larger numbers. With this option, you won’t have to predict the print run you’ll require and put any extra stock in storage, saving you the cost of this. It’s a great choice for creating maps and other products that are out of print too – we can store your digital files for when they’re required. Print on demand allows you to print what you need, when you need it.
You also offer a fulfilment service for print on demand products. Can you tell us more about this?
Clients can set up their websites so that when an order is placed, it comes directly to Dennis Maps – and we then handle the process. We print the product that’s been ordered and send it directly to your customers. Our team can add branded packaging too, an extra opportunity to promote your business.
Which products can Dennis Maps print on demand?
We can print a range of products on demand, although we largely print maps. Print on demand isn’t a service that’s tailored for lithographically printed maps – it’s costly to set up printing plates for these printers, so bigger print runs are more economical. However, we offer the service for digitally printed maps and it’s a popular choice with our customers. We can print other products, such as posters, on demand too, on certain types of paper. Can you tell us more about the map formats you can print on demand?
We’ve developed a set of map formats so that you can order a single map or small print run of maps easily and cost effectively. As an example, here are some of the folded map formats you can choose from:
Ordnance Survey Explorer Format:
Open flat trimmed size 952mm x 1270mm, finished folded size 127mm x 238mm. Folded configuration one horizontal fold along the long edge – nine vertical concertina folds along the long edge, making 10 panels of 127mm, then in half giving the final size.
Ordnance Survey Landranger Format:
Open flat trimmed size 890mm x 1000mm, finished folded size 125mm x 222.5mm. Folded configuration one horizontal fold along the long edge – seven vertical concertina folds along the long edge making 8 panels of 125mm, then in half to give the final size.

Do you have any examples of maps that the company prints on demand?
Yes, we print all Ordnance Survey’s Custom Made Maps and Eggnog’s colour in tablecloths. These are only two examples of the many maps we print on demand.
