Today is St David’s Day and to celebrate the occasion we’ve selected our favourite outdoor…
It’s almost Valentine’s Day, a great excuse to plan outdoor activities with your loved one! Here’s our pick of the top experiences to try on the most romantic day of the year. From stargazing to hiking the UK’s many hills and mountains, there are plenty of adventures to choose from.

Set up a romantic scavenger hunt
Plan a Valentine’s Day-themed scavenger hunt to surprise your significant other. Get into the great outdoors and give them a list with a series of items to find over a set area. You could plant your own sentimental objects and include themed items they’ll find outdoors too, e.g., something heart shaped or something red. When they finish the scavenger hunt reward them with a Valentine’s Day card and present. Looking for a family activity? Adapt your list to include sensory objects for young scavengers to see, hear, taste, smell and touch.

Enjoy al fresco food on a campfire
It may be winter but that doesn’t have to stand in the way of al fresco dining! If the weather is dry, head outside and set up a campfire. Whether you’re on a beach or in the woods, a crackling fire creates a cosy, romantic mood. Bring along marshmallows to toast and hot chocolate to keep your and your loved one warm. Jamie Oliver has some delicious recipes for campfire cooking, if you’re looking for extra ideas. Make sure you light your fire somewhere fires are permitted and put it out when you’re finished.

See the stars
There are few activities more romantic than gazing at a starlit sky. In the UK, we’re lucky to have over 20 International Dark Sky Places – protected areas of low light pollution where you can enjoy incredible views of the night sky. From Bannau Brycheiniog National Park to Sark – the first Dark Sky Island in the world – there are plenty of starry spots to choose from. If you can’t get to one of these places, find somewhere local with low levels of artificial light to stargaze. It’s a date night that’s out of this world.

Hike up a hill or mountain
Why not hike up a hill or mountain on Valentine’s Day? You and your loved one will be rewarded with incredible views at the top! It’s worth noting that winter hikes present unique challenges. Check out our blog about how to stay safe on hill and mountain walks this winter. With a few precautions in place, you can enjoy an awe-inspiring vista on Valentine’s Day.

Get on your (tandem) bike
You might be used to solo cycling, but tandem cycling is the perfect alternative for Valentine’s Day. Find a place to rent a tandem bike and take your loved one on a two-wheeled adventure through the local area. Tandeming can take a bit of getting used to, so factor in time to practise too. And check out these top tips for riding a tandem bike.

Stroll along the beach
Sure, it’s February, but with warm layers on you can still enjoy a stroll along the beach. Whichever beach you choose, it’ll likely be quieter in winter months than during the summer season. And nothing says romance like a deserted beach to yourselves. Draw hearts in the sand, spot coastal wildlife and take a dip in the water if you’re feeling brave!

Take to the water
Rent a canoe, kayak or pedalo for a daytime date on the water. It’s a great opportunity to work together and get some exercise. Plus, there’s something romantic and magical about gliding through the water with the one you love.
