A new year of outdoor adventures is about to begin! Before it does, let’s take a moment to look back at 2024. Discover the best adventures our customers, staff and friends have had outdoors over the past year.

“Since childhood, I’ve been a keen hill walker, and I was recently introduced to the joys of having a canine companion to take along with me. My best adventure this year was a circuit of the Creag Meagaidh trio of Munros by Loch Laggan in the Scottish Highlands. I enjoyed the fantastic scenery in the late summer sun, and Spirit enjoyed jumping in every muddy puddle we passed!”

“As someone who grew up in London surrounded by light pollution, I now take any opportunity to go stargazing. This year, I fell in love with astrophotography. I spent many a night camping under the stars and even saw the Aurora Borealis in England. However, my favourite outdoor adventure in 2024 was taking my mum camping, her first time in forty-five years.”

“My best adventure barely counts as an adventure. It’s just walking one or two kilometres in the woods in Surrey. In 2023, I had an epic adventure to the Arctic which won me European Adventurer of the Year, so the 2024 version may seem tame and boring. But not to me. I did it with our two-year-old daughter running around and my wife with our one-year-old son in a hiking rucksack. It reminded me that the quality of an adventure lies in the company. And this was the best company I could ever dream of.”

“The UK has some classic areas of geology and landscape. A highlight for me this year was a return visit to the Yorkshire Dales. I had a great hike into Malham Cove and up on to the remarkable limestone pavement above it, continuing to the chasm of Gordale Scar. And there was even time for a sunset walk above nearby Austwick, to see the glacial boulders of the famous Norber Erratics.”

“We love heading down to Cornwall as much as we can throughout the year. The outdoor adventure highlight for me this year was heading out on one of the wildlife boat trips with Padstow Sealife Safaris. We often walk parts of the South West Coast Path with our dogs, but it was fascinating to see the Cornish coastline from a totally different perspective. We were lucky enough to see grey seals, seabirds and my personal highlight, the common dolphins.”

“This year, I completed all the routes for the launch of The 2nd Bath 5k Map. It’s been a wonderful way to rediscover yet more incredible countryside and routes in and around Bath. I particularly enjoyed Walk 40, from Claverton Down to Monkton Combe Village. It’s so close to home, and I feel so fortunate to have this access on my doorstep. It’s a reminder of how you don’t have to travel to exotic and faraway places to enjoy the outdoors. You can find joy in exploring nature nearby.”

“One of this year’s biggest adventures was a mighty three-kilometre slog from Rhossili to Hillend on the Gower… with a six and three-year-old in tow (quite literally, at points). Sure, it’s just a beach walk, but factor in gale-force headwinds, horizontal rain, towering dunes that rival the Himalayas, and shifting sands that test your soul. Oh, and the endless collection of large, profoundly unremarkable stones hauled along like treasure. A heroic journey in every sense!”

“My adventure holiday this year took me to the Brecon Beacons, ‘Waterfall Country’. Staying in a pod in the middle of a wood you get to see spectacular views, hear calming sounds and feel total relaxation. The rainy weather enhanced the waterfalls. Standing behind Henrhyd Falls – which is 27 meters high – felt very inspiring (and damp!). Many amazing memories were made.”
