Summer is the perfect time to swim outdoors in Britain. Whether you prefer iconic art deco lidos or bracing tidal pools, there’s something for everyone. Here are our favourite outdoor swimming spots to make a splash in this summer.
Bude Sea Pool, Cornwall, England
Bude Sea Pool is built on the edge of the wild Atlantic Ocean, making it a stunning spot for a dip. The semi-natural tidal pool opened in 1930 on Summerleaze Beach and has been loved by visitors ever since. The Pool is highly rated on Tripadvisor, with one visitor commenting, “Bude Sea Pool is my favourite place in the world. I have visited it many times, in all months and seasons. It is never the same, but always magical…”. And the best part? It’s free!

Clevedon Marine Lake, North Somerset, England
This is a swimming spot that’s all about the view. Clevedon Marine Lake is a tidal infinity pool built on the edge of the Severn Estuary. On a clear day you can look across the water all the way to Wales. The Marine Lake is in the seaside town of Clevedon, which boasts the only intact Grade I listed pier in England (catch a view of it from the Lake) and a pretty seafront. Gourock Pool, Renfrewshire, Scotland
Gourock Pool is a heated saltwater pool that looks out over the Clyde Estuary. It’s got everything you’ll need for your visit, including changing rooms, free parking and a pool terrace. Looking for something a bit different? During the summer there are Starlight Swims. Lie back, relax and look up at the stars while you gently swim along.

Jubilee Pool, Cornwall, England
Jubilee Pool is something quite special – it’s home to the largest seawater lido in the UK and the first geothermally heated sea pool. The main pool refills at high tide, making it the perfect spot for a refreshing swim all year round. There’s a saltwater pool for children, plus a naturally heated geothermal sea pool for a warmer dip, with temperatures up to 30 degrees. A range of classes and events, from AquaFit to yoga, also take place at Jubilee Pool.

Lido Ponty, Pontypridd, Wales
As the National Lido of Wales, Lido Ponty is as impressive as you’d expect. It’s been awarded the Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence and it’s certainly well deserved. Lido Ponty has three pools to choose from – its main pool, activity pool and splash pool, with all pools a warm 28 degrees. There’s also a sun terrace, showers, heated changing facilities, an adventure playground, and a Visitor Centre where you can find out all about the Lido. The Lido opens on 14th August and tickets are already selling out fast – get them while you can!

Nantwich Brine Pool, Cheshire, England
According to the Nantwich News, Nantwich Brine Pool is thought to be the UK’s only remaining inland brine pool, with brine pumped in from a nearby underground well. The Pool is outdoors but has a temperature of 22 degrees, that’s often higher due to solar gain. There are also sun loungers to relax poolside, and a kiosk for snacks and refreshments. Members swim for free and non-members have a pay-as-you-go option. Nantwich Brine Pool opened in 1935 and is still popular with visitors from near and far.

Saltdean Lido, Brighton, England
Saltdean Lido is unique as England’s sole Grade II listed coastal lido. The 1930’s Lido was designed in the ‘International Style’, a post-First World War architectural movement. It’s practical as well as pretty, with its crescent-shaped, heated pool, a grassy area for relaxation, a children’s splash pool and several eateries. A range of events are held here, including an annual dog swim, so your four-legged friend can go swimming too!

Stonehaven Open Air Pool, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Stonehaven Open Air Pool is the sole art deco Olympic-size seawater lido in the UK. It’s heated too, making it the ideal spot for those who want a warmer swim. It also boasts a paddling pool for wee ones, inflatable sessions for older ones and a café. There’s even live music and entertainment on some days too. The venue was opened in 1934 and is celebrating its 90th birthday this year.

The Serpentine Lido, London, England
The Serpentine Lido is home to Britain’s oldest swimming club, and we can see why its swimmers chose this spot. From the idyllic Lido you can take in views of London’s famous Hyde Park as you swim, often passing swans and ducks as you go. The renowned Lido also has changing rooms, showers and a café with tables by the water. You can hire a rowboat or pedalo, as another way to explore the Serpentine.
